CCMC Emergency Department Observation Unit | Hartford, CT

The design finishes for the Connecticut Children’s Emergency Department Observation Unit provide a more controlled, soothing environment for psychiatric patients. The design team was charged with reviewing color theory and patterns that would not agitate patients, resulting in a subtle color palette complete with blues and greens. M. Frank Higgins installed Armstrong sheet flooring in the color palette with accent circles and soft curves to provide visual edges for patients’ eyes to follow. Moving through this space offers patients a relaxing way to experience their surrounding environment, hopefully reducing the stressful nature of the patient’s overall experience.
